EDTECH Professional Ethics

Ethics Scenerio

The purpose of this assignment is to compose a scenario, along with an analysis that illustrates either a professional ethics issue related to educational technology or one from my own experience as an educator.

The ethics scenario artifact I chose to report on is an article from The New York Times titled Silicon Valley Courts Brand-Name Teachers, Raising Ethic Issues.  This article was written by  N. Singer on January 20, 2018.

Briefly, this article is about how and why teachers use certain educational technology tools in their classrooms based on company incentives and the ethical dilemma behind the story.  It is nice to get gifts, but is this really a good idea to accept gifts from companies knowing that they are influencing you to use their products?  Many teachers pay for classroom materials out of their own pocket.  To get a gift certificate from a company seems nice, but what is the intent behind it?  Is it ethically correct to accept these gifts?  As technology moves quicker and quicker into classrooms each day, it is important as teachers to think about what is best for the students now and in the future of educational technology.

By researching ethical scenarios and applying the Code of Professional Ethics, I learned how to analyze educational scenarios and apply valuable ethical principles.  I also learned how and why it is so valuable to research the Code of Professional Ethics when dealing with an ethical dilemma.  These Codes can guide in the process of deciding how to work through an ethical issue.
