Flipped Classroom Presentation

Flipped Classroom Presentation

The purpose of this assignment was to learn how to create a powerful and engaging presentation, using multimedia principles and principles from the Presentation Zen book.  My assignment was to design a Google Slides presentation based on the following scenario-

Your principle has just returned from a leadership conference and is excited about implementing flipped classroom strategies throughout the school. She has also received grant money to purchase iPads for all students. She has announced this Flipped Classroom initiative at a faculty meeting and has assigned you (as you are the recognized expert at your school, enrolled in the EDTECH program at Boise State) to provide help, structuring a plan that would allow your teachers to use flipped classroom strategies successfully.

I learned many new skills on how to create an effective slideshow presentation.  They are-

  • The fewer words on the slide the better
  • People are visual learners, so have visuals on the slide to have a more effective presentation
  • The information shared should come from the presenter telling the audience, not words on the slide
  • It is important to give a handout to the audience of the information of the slideshow.  This is where the written information will be located
  • Put pictures of real people in the slides
  • Keep the slides visually simple-straight and to the point- only a few words and/or pictures
  • Blue or green backgrounds are the suggested colors
  • If graphs, charts... are used in the slides, make sure there are only a few bars.  If pie graphs are used, make sure to use only a few colors to show the data
  • Put talking points in the speaker notes at the bottom of the Google Slides

Scenario

The following scenario was addressed in creating this artifact:

Your principle has just returned from a leadership conference and is excited about implementing flipped classroom strategies throughout the school. She has also received grant money to purchase iPads for all students. She has announced this Flipped Classroom initiative at a faculty meeting and has assigned you (as you are the recognized expert at your school, enrolled in the EDTECH program at Boise State) to provide help, structuring a plan that would allow your teachers to use flipped classroom strategies successfully.

The majority of your students come from lower socio-economic households, lacking Internet access at home. Many of the parents lack basic digital literacy skills and would be challenged to provide technical support to their children. Also, most of the teachers in your school have never used iPads before and do not know how to create an audio recording and/or videos.

You've read some articles and research about the "Homework Gap" -- "The cruelest part of the Digital Divide"-- and feel that you have an uphill road. However, you also know that you can recommend a course of action that will be doable and result in improved opportunities for students to learn with technology.

You've decided to put together some background information about the challenges of the Homework Gap and flipped classrooms, along with a plan for successful implementation of flipping the classroom using the iPads. You will create a Google Slides presentation along with speaker notes to augment a live presentation.

Annotation: 1.3

AECT 1.3 (Content Knowledge) Assessing/Evaluating – Candidates demonstrate the ability to assess and evaluate the effective integration of appropriate technologies and instructional materials.

Creating - I have created a powerful and engaging presentation, using multimedia principles and principles from the Presentation Zen book through Google Slides.

Using -By creating a Google Slides Flipped Classroom Presentation, I have demonstrated the ability to select and use technological resources.  This presentation also supports student learning by presenting a plan to implement the flipped classroom model to improve student learning.

Assessing/Evaluating - While creating the Flipped Classroom Slides Presentation, I assessed my work by comparing it to the  principles from the Presentation Zen book and the tips from the Presentation Zen website: http://www.garrreynolds.com/preso-tips/

Managing -By researching the flipped classroom model challenges and successes, I was able to integrate that information into my Google Slides to inform staff members of the benefits of the flipped classroom model.

Ethics -  By researching effective strategies to implement the flipped classroom model, I demonstrated the contemporary professional ethics of the field.
